SHEFFIELD are back on top of the Premier League table after collecting maximum points in last night’s local derby at Owlerton.
Tigers’ 16-point win over Scunthorpe sees them leapfrog Glasgow at the summit.
The Scorpions, already without the injured Viktor Bergstrom, were reduced to five riders as early as Heat 2 when reserve Thomas Jorgensen crashed heavily whilst battling with Ashley Birks.
But Tigers dominated the race wins, with Josh Auty and Shane Parker both victorious in three of their first four outings, and Ricky Ashworth adding two successes of his own after being beaten in his opening two outings, the second seeing him just get home with mechanical trouble in Heat 6.
Tigers took control of the meeting with a run of three successive 4-2s starting in Heat 7, with Auty providing a trademark inside overtake on Tero Aarnio in Heat 9 to extend the lead to ten points.
Hugh Skidmore crashed out of the lead in Heat 10 but Ashworth won the re-run, passing former Sheffield man Ben Wilson. And when visiting captain David Howe went for double-points in Heat 11 he suffered his first defeat of the night at the hands of Parker.
Tigers added a well-taken 5-1 in Heat 12 with Auty winning ahead of a frantic battle for second place which was eventually taken by Ashley Birks, despite a late challenge from Michael Palm Toft.
Parker ground to a halt in Heat 13 but Ashworth defeated Aarnio’s tactical ride, and a 4-2 in Heat 14 ensured all three points for the home side as Emilano Sanchez took the win over Wilson with Simon Lambert third.
Although the match was won the final heat was the race of the night with Auty superbly going past Aarnio and Howe to link up with Parker for a terrific 5-1.
SHEFFIELD: Josh Auty 13+1, Shane Parker 12, Ricky Ashworth 10, Emiliano Sanchez 7+2, Simon Lambert 5, Hugh Skidmore 4+1, Ashley Birks 4+1.
