Super Stead can’t save Tigers

Sheffield Tigers chief Peter Mole admitted the club’s crippling injury list was too much to cope with in Saturday’s 59-33 thumping at Berwick.

Skipper Simon Stead was in stunning form as he reeled off four straight wins - but he had little support from his stand-in colleagues.

With reserve Josh Bates the latest casualty, Sheffield went into the meeting with only Stead, Taylor Poole and Ben Wilson from their first choice side.

Nico Covatti makes his debut this Thursday replacing Ty Proctor, Andre Compton is expected to return to the side but question marks remain over Lanham and Bates.

Said Mole: “It was always going to be a tough ask to go to Berwick with that team and get something from there. It’s a difficult place to go at the best of times and they are on a roll right now.

“Our injury problems have caught up with us and it’s a shame but hopefully we can get the riders back and we can get some good results between now and the end of the season.

“Simon was magnificent, he was flying after his first couple of rides.”

Berwick 59: Claus Vissing 13, Matthew Wethers 11+3, Matej Kus 10+1, Steen Jensen 9+1, Alex Edberg 7+2, Kevin Doolan 7+1, David Bellego 2.

Sheffield 33: Simon Stead 18, Taylor Poole 6, Justin Sedgmen 5+1, Ben Wilson 2, Mason Campton 2, Chris Widman 0, Leigh Lanham r/r.
