Simon Stead has what it takes to be top dog in the Premier League this season – according to Tigers boss Joe Screen.
Screen, in his first season in charge of the Owlerton side, is a former team-mate of Stead from their time together at Belle Vue.
Stead has made a solid start to the season and Screen believes he can finish top of the Premier League averages.
He said: “Simon is a class act, he’s so professional and he is a great skipper for me to work with.
“In fact it was Simon who called me and asked me to become coach at Sheffield, then it became team manager and here I am! He’s passionate about Sheffield, wants to see his local club be successful and that’s great.
“He’s a great rider at this level, he can be unstoppable on his day and he’s a good lad to have in the No.1 position.
“He’s worked hard to come back from a nasty injury too. When you look at the time he’s spent in physical training, it’s great and I’m sure the rewards will come for him throughout the year.
“I know what it’s like coming back from injury, it’s never easy and he’s really looking sharp.
“He can beat anyone around Sheffield, he’s that good and he’s also willing to help the younger lads in the side.”
Screen is happy with life as a manager at Owlerton – especially working closely with the riders.
He said: “It’s great for me because I’m only just retired from riding so I can see where riders need to work on certain areas. Sheffield’s a good club and there’s a good atmosphere.”
