Scunthorpe 46 v Sheffield Tigers 43
SHEFFIELD experienced heartbreak in a dramatic last race defeat at Scunthorpe.
The Tigers went into the final heat leading 43-41 only to see both Richard Hall and Skipper Ricky Ashworth excluded.
Hall just made it to the start line after having bike problems and when the tapes lifted he fell on the first bend. Ashworth also hit the deck whilst comfortably in front on the second lap. The re-run left the Scunthorpe duo of Ben Wilson and Tero Aarnio to ride unopposed for the most unlikely of victories.
Sheffield led from as early as Ashley Birks and Simon Lambert’s 5-1 in heat 2.
Scorpions reduced the deficit to 23-19 with a 4-2 in Heat 7, but Emiliano Sanchez and Lambert restored the eight-point advantage with a maximum one race later.
Heat 9 resulted in Scunthorpe reply with a 5-1 of their own, but Heat 10 saw Ashworth beat home favourite David Howe from the start and Hugh Skidmore passed Thomas Jorgensen for a Tigers 4-2.
Tero Aarnio and Worrall looked to be heading for a 5-1 in Heat 11, but Hall flew past the home pair on the third lap to give the Tigers a share of the points.
And then Aarnio and Howe set up a tense finish as result of a Scorpions 4-2 in Heat 13.
With Lambert excluded in the penultimate race Ashworth could only split the home pair of Wilson and Worrall, and with the Tigers leading by two-points the match was decided by the last race.
