Danish star Nicolai Klindt makes his Sheffield debut in their Premier League trip to Workington tonight – but club bosses have revealed how they tried to sign him earlier in the season.

The 26-year-old replaces Andre Compton who is the latest addition to an ever-growing Tigers injury list in 2015.

Klindt has plenty of experience and was an Elite League winner with Wolverhampton in 2009 and Tigers co-promoter Damien Bates is delighted to finally have him on board.

Said Bates: “Me and Nicolai have actually spoken a couple of times already this season and Sheffield has always been a club he’s wanted to ride for.

“At one-point we looked at bringing him in for Simon Stead but realistically, because of his average, we couldn’t do that because that would have shoved other members of our team into higher positions and I don’t think it would have been fair on the rest of them to have that bit of extra pressure.

“But as soon as we knew Andre was going to be out for some time, this was the perfect opportunity to fit Nicolai in and it means there’s no pressure on Andre to rush back as we’ve now got cover for him.

“Nicolai is a fantastic rider, he’s one of the best gaters in speedway and when he does get out in front he takes some catching I’ll tell you!

“I think this signing shows just how serious we are about finishing the season on a real high despite the number of riders we’ve lost through injury over the year.

“I’m so proud that we’re sitting where we are right now after everything – but we want to make sure we get to those end-of-season play-offs starting by picking up some more league points at Workington.”

Sheffield have booked Great Britain international Danny King to deputise at No.1 for tonight’s crunch clash.

WORKINGTON: Ricky Wells, Rusty Harrison, Rene Bach, Kenneth Hansen, Kyle Howarth, Matt Williamson, Matthew Wethers.

SHEFFIELD: Danny King, Paco Castagna, David Bellego, Nicolai Klindt, Jason Garrity, Arthur Sissis, Josh Bates.
