A couple of former Sheffield favourites couldn’t stop Australia from beating Great Britain in an enthralling night at Owlerton yesterday.

Ex-Tigers Josh Auty and Ricky Ashworth top-scored for Team GB and they were the men charged with the task of winning the meeting with the scores locked at 42-42 going into the last race.

It was the Aussie duo of Cameron Woodward and Kozza Smith who triumphed though, somehow holding off a hard-charging Ashworth to secure a match-winning 4-2 and haul Australia back into the five-match series.

The two teams were well evenly matched and there was never more than two points separating them but that means nothing to Great Britain, who will be disappointed to lose the tie in the very last race.

In one of Owlerton’s most exciting meetings all year, Sheffield favourites Adam Roynon and Joe Haines notched five and two respectively.

Great Britain: (Ashworth 11, Auty 10+1, Newman 6+1, Lawson 6, Roynon 5, Bridger 3+1, Haines 2+1)

Australia: (Woodward 12, Smith 8, Harrison 7+3, North 7, Gathercole 5+1, Nelson 4+1, Doolan 3+1)
