Tigers racer Andre Compton has been forced to delay his comeback by a week.

The news means the former Premier League Riders’ Champion will miss tomorrow’s clash with his old club Workington at Owlerton after medics advised him to take another few days off.

Compton suffered a blow to the head in the televised meeting with Somerset last week when Pontus Aspgren couldn’t avoid him.

“I suppose it could have been a lot worse,” he said.

“I remember going down but didn’t think that anyone would hit me so I was quite relaxed and wasn’t braced for anything.

“If I had been braced and rigid then as daft as it sounds there could have been more damage.

“I’ve watched it on television since and he did hit me quite hard.

“My helmet had a big hole in it from the footrest and the polystyrene inside was crumpled inside, so thankfully it did its job.

“I was obviously taken to hospital but was kept waiting for hours and when I did get the all-clear I went home the next morning.

“After that I slept most of the next day but came round pretty quickly and now I’m looking forward to getting back on a bike.

“I have made contact with Pontus and told him not to worry because it wasn’t his fault, it was just one of those things that happens in speedway.

“I think I was hit by the side of the bike and the exhaust, there’s a big melted patch on the back of my kevlars, but I feel OK now.”

Ashley Birks and Kevin Wolbert replace Leigh Lanham and Ty Proctor respectively tomorrow with the rider replacement facility in operation for Compton.

But the team are boosted by the return of Simon Stead after his efforts for Great Britain at the World Cup in Poland last week.

Josh Bates has also recovered from a wrist injury.

Revised Sheffield team: Simon Stead, Andre Compton R/R, Ben Wilson, Ashley Birks, Kevin Wolbert, Taylor Poole, Josh Bates.
