TOOTHLESS Tigers were outclassed 63-27 in their latest League Cup clash at Newcastle last night.
Joe Screen’s men were without the ill Simon Nielsen - but that takes nothing away from the Diamonds who sparkled from the opening race on a chilly, blustery night.
From the moment Swedish star Ludvig Lindgren rocketed to an impressive win in the opening race there was no looking back for the home side.
Sheffield weren’t short of race winners with ex-Newcastle man Andre Compton at reserve and skipper Simon Stead recovered from a nightmare start to win Heat 11.
Newcastle’s Norfolk duo Lewis Kerr and Lewis Rose impressed throughout and Stuart Robson, who has bounced back from serious injuries to salvage his career, was entertaining as always for the big Tyneside crowd.
Sheffield’s night was summed up in the last heat when they were outfought from the start and skipper Stead retired with mechanical problems.
There’s no doubt this was a night to forget for the ambitious Tigers - but they cannot afford too many repeats of this week and need to bounce back quickly. The result means Sheffield need back-to-back wins over Redcar this week if they are to qualify for the semi-finals. They race at home on Thursday with the return at the South Tees Motorsport Park on Friday.
Newcastle 63: Lewis Kerr 14+1, Ludvig Lindgren 12+3, Stuart Robson 10+2, Christian Henry 10+1, Lewis Rose 7+1, Anton Rosen 6+2, Chris Schramm 4+2.
Sheffield 27: Andre Compton 8, Leigh Lanham 7, Simon Stead 6, Taylor Poole 2+1, Adam Roynon 2, Josh Bates 2, Simon Nielsen r/r.
