Solid Tigers prove Diamonds aren't forever

SHEFFIELD TIGERS 58 NEWCASTLE DIAMONDS 37 A BUMPER crowd saw Tigers bag another three vital Premier League points to take the shine off the resurgent Diamonds.

The visitors were bolstered by the addition of Aussie Mark Lemon and free-scoring new Dane Rene Bach, but neither could halt Sheffield's charge up the table.

Newcastle managed just five race winners as Tigers opened with a 5-1 from Ricky Ashworth and livewire Hugh Skidmore and never looked back.

Another 5-1 from Richard Hall and Joel Parsons in heat 5 stretched the gap to 20-10 and a third from Skidmore and Chris Mills made it 32-18 at the half-way mark.

Sheffield's only blips came when Ashworth was put off a 15-metre handicap in heat 10 for trying to jump the start, having been warned by the referee in his previous ride.

Newcastle responded with a 5-1 from Bach and Jason King.

Dane Kenni Larsen took a tactical ride win in the 11th to claim more points for the visitors, but with Tigers rock solid right down the order, Newcastle were never in the hunt.

Hall was top scorer for Sheffield with three race wins in his 13 points, only losing out to King and Bach, but otherwise looking superb.

Parsons was next best on paid 12.

He would have had more had he got the better of Bach in a superb final race, when the lead changed several times in a battle for second place before the Diamonds' new star managed to fend him off. The points propel Sheffield into the top half of the table and Eric Boocock's side will be looking for another maximum return at lowly Newport on Sunday.

NEWCASTLE: J. King 10+1, R. Bach 9+1, K. Larsen 7, T. Leverington 6, M. Lemon 4, D. Sneddon 1, A. McKinna 0.
