Skidmore's flying debut as Tigers triumph

Sheffield Tigers 53 Newcastle 42

TEENAGER Hugh Skidmore made a sensational debut as Sheffield completed their home Premier Trophy fixtures with a comprehensive victory over Newcastle at Owlerton last night.

The 18-year-old Aussie struggled in his opening ride as he finished nearly half a lap behind the winner - but then clicked into gear to notch a second place behind team-mate Ricky Ashworth and then have the crowd on their feet with two stunning wins.

"It was amazing and I'm delighted," said Skidmore afterwards.

"I'm glad to get a chance and I hope to keep it going. I couldn't have hoped for a better debut," he added.

Skidmore finished with paid 8 as Sheffield eased to victory against a Diamonds side hit by a third race injury to Derek Sneddon which ruled him out of the rest of the meeting, while Trent Leverington and Adam McKinna also failed to score.

But the visitors had superb performances from Kenni Larsen and former Tiger Lee Complin to keep them in the meeting, claiming a paid 31 points between them, while Jason King was also a lively performer.

Tigers were never troubled despite Newcastle winning seven heats - including an 8-0 in heat 13 as Josh Auty crashed and Ricky Ashworth was also excluded.

Top Tiger Richard Hall sped to two wins in his 12-point haul and Paul Cooper bagged a paid 13 and just missed out on a maximum in the final heat.

TIGERS: Hall 12, Cooper 10+3, Parsons 8+1, Skidmore 7+1, Mills 6+3, Auty 5+1, Ashworth 5

NEWCASTLE: Larsen 16, Complin 14+1, King 8, Branney 4, Leverington Sneddon 0, McKinna 0.
