Sheffield saw their hectic spell come to a disappointing conclusion with a heavy 54-36 defeat at Newcastle.

The Tigers travelled to Tyneside without inspirational heat-leader Jason Garrity due to a hand injury.

They were powerless to prevent their second crushing loss at Brough Park this season having gone down 68-22 against the Diamonds in the Knockout Cup a month ago.

It was certainly a night to forget for the Tigers, who traditionally struggle around a tight, tricky circuit in stark contrast with their Owlerton home.

They delivered just three wins and never looked in contention for a consolation point.

Battling young gun Josh Bates, was the pick of the visiting riders with a resilient display. He fought his way past Matej Kus for second place in heat three before pushing in-form ace Steve Worrall all the way in heat four.

That prompted team boss Marc Bates to put him on a tactical ride in heat seven after they had conceded two successive 5-1s – but he was unable to land a blow on Lewis Rose and Worrall.

The Barnsley racer provided the highlight of the evening when he was partnered by Kyle Howarth for a maximum of their own in heat 10.

Yet it proved their only heat advantage as they never looked likely to mount a comeback on a night to forget.

After a breathless spell of three meetings in the space of four days, the Tigers will be back in action as they host Edinburgh in a crucial encounter at Owlerton on Thursday (7.30).
