Kyle Howarth is trying to keep himself busy in a bid to challenge for top spot in the Sheffield team.
Howarth has signed a deal to ride in the Elite League with Wolverhampton on a doubling-up basis – but they have only had three meetings so far thanks to the poor weather.
Now he’s looking for more track time to supplement his Tigers outings and is even prepared to travel for some after-meeting practice.
He said: “It’s going well for Sheffield but I really feel I need to be busier because that would make me sharper.
“Just riding in one league suits some people, but I want to keep busy and that’s why I’m happy to travel and try and get some extra laps in at places.
“It will get busier as the season goes on and I certainly feel that will benefit me. In an ideal world I would love to challenge for top spot in the team but that place belongs to Steady (Simon Stead).”
Howarth was delighted to help Tigers through to the League Cup semi-finals last week.
“It was good to get the home win over Ipswich and that booked our place,” he said. “Ipswich are a good side and they have riders who go well around Sheffield and it was no surprise they pushed us all the way.
“I wasn’t too happy with my own scores because I know I can do more and hopefully that will come as the season goes on.”
Tigers face Rye House in their opening Premier League outing of the season at Owlerton tomorrow and then head to Plymouth on Friday.
“We need to get some points on the board early on,” said Howarth. “It’s important for us to start with a win against Rye House,” said Howarth. “Then we go down to Plymouth so there is an opportunity for us here to pick up some points early on in the season.
“We need the backing of all our supporters at Sheffield, they’ve certainly made me welcome and I’m pleased to be riding for the club.
“Everything about the place is good – the track, stadium, sponsors, fans and the management. I’m glad I made the move, it’s a new challenge for me and I want to make the most of it for sure.”
Tigers are at full strength for tomorrow’s meeting which starts at 7.30pm.
