Thursday’s home win over Plymouth saw them go above Glasgow and skipper Simon Stead says they go to Tyneside in good heart for the first leg with the return at Owlerton next week.

“It was a hard fought win on Thursday for the lads and now we have to build on that in the cup,” he said.

“Newcastle are very powerful around their own track but we will go there looking to keep the scores close for Thursday back at Sheffield.”

Tigers continue to use the rider replacement facility for the injured Jason Garrity who is out until August with a broken arm.

Newcastle include Robert Lambert and Matej Kus who are both expected to feature in the Speedway World Cup later this month.

And Steve Worrall spearheads their challenge after a stunning season which has seen him become joint track record holder at the new National Speedway Stadium in Manchester.
