Joe Screen can’t wait to lead his Sheffield side into action on home shale for the first time tomorrow.

The former Bradford and Belle Vue star has taken charge of the team after quitting as a rider last season.

He made a dream start when Tigers won at Scunthorpe in the League Cup on Sunday – and he wants to follow that up against Newcastle at Owlerton.

“Sunday was amazing, but we need to follow it up by winning at home,” he said. “It’s no good winning away and all the euphoria that goes with it if we can’t follow it up at home, so Thursday is vital. If we win our home meetings in the League Cup group from here we will go through to the next stage.”

Screen says his side will surprise a few experts this season. I don’t think we’re that strongly fancied, but that suits me down to the ground.

“We will just get on with doing our own thing. The lads work together superbly, I’ve known Simon Stead (capt) for a few years and it’s great how he’s been training with Josh Bates in the winter. We’ve got a great balance to the team and just can’t wait to get back on track tomorrow!”

The club will be issuing programmes free of charge as a way of thanking supporters for backing the club in Monday’s Air Fence Fund Bonanza which was washed out after 11 heats.

Club boss Damien Bates said: “We’ll give everyone a free programme oas a gesture because I don’t want the fans to think that I’m just taking from them.”
