The Tigers are on the lookout for a new signing after losing both Simon Stead and David Bellego at the weekend.
Sheffield, who have been in stunning form so far this season, have no option but to look for a short term replacement after news filtered through that Bellego suffered a fractured hip and will be out for six weeks.
Stead, meanwhile, has suffered serious arm and leg injuries and there are already doubts over whether he will be back on a bike at all this season.
The club have already booked Great Britain international Craig Cook as a guest replacement for Stead in Thursday’s clash with Somerset at Owlerton.
Beleagured Tigers co-promoter Damien Bates said: “I can confirm we are on the lookout for a short term signing to cover our injury problems.
“It’s come as a massive blow to us, but our first thoughts have to be with the injured lads, Simon and David have been brilliant so far this season and it’s hard for them to take.
“They are both tough lads and it certainly overshadowed what was a great effort from the team, some things are just more important than sport.
“We are pleased to welcome Craig Cook into the side for Thursday, he’s a top quality rider, one of the best at this level, and we couldn’t have wished for a better replacement.”
“Somerset will be hard enough to beat as it is, but this just makes it that little bit harder, they will certainly be a big test for us and we will need the remaining five regulars to be on their game.”
Stead has been visited in hospital by team mate Andre Compton, who says the skipper is in good spirits.
“I was pleased to see him in good spirits, it was good to go and see him, and we all wish him well for a full and comfortable recovery,” he said.
“Best wishes also to David, it means we are two men down now – time for us all to stick together and battle through this.”
