Joe Screen is challenging his Sheffield side to show some character when they face back-to-back meetings with Redcar this week.

The Tigers boss was left disappointed by his riders after defeats at home to Scunthorpe and at Newcastle on Sunday.

Now he wants his riders to bounce back to put themselves back in the frame for a place in the League Cup semi-finals. They face the Bears at Owlerton on Thursday with the return at the South Tees Motorsport Park on Friday.

Screen said: “We knew it was going to be difficult against Newcastle because they are such a good side at home, but I don’t think any of us expected it to be that bad.

“Some of the riders had issues early on and heads went down which didn’t help matters.

“In the end we were just well beaten by, and we were all disappointed we weren’t able to put up more of a fight.

“After the week we’ve had we desperately need a win now.

“I’ve got to say I didn’t expect us to lose at home against Scunthorpe last week - we knew it would be tough but that result shocked me a bit.

“We’ve had a couple of bad results and heads have dropped a little bit but these things happen in speedway and we just need to try and pick everyone up for two massive meetings against Redcar.

“It’s going to be difficult but we know we are capable of getting good results. Fingers crossed everyone can up their game and we can do what we need to do to get through to the next round.”

Meanwhile Tigers youngster Josh Bates takes his place in the British Under 21 Final at Wolverhampton tonight (7.30).
