RICKY Ashworth is ‘gutted’ by Sheffield’s decision to release him from their 2012 team.
The former Premier League Riders’ Champion has just completed a decade with the club but is now looking for a new club as Tigers go for a revamped side.
His release means he joins Shane Parker (retired), Josh Auty and Ashley Birks (Scunthorpe) and Simon Lambert (Leicester) through the door along with team boss Eric Boocock.
And Ashworth said: “I just want to say a massive thanks to all my fans and friends. Sadly my Sheffield days are over for now at least. It’s been a memorable 10 years. I’ve had loads of fun along the way but I feel absolutely gutted.”
Club co-boss David Hoggart says releasing Ashworth was a tough task.
He said: “I can honestly say the call I had to make to Ricky was one of the hardest I have ever made. He’s a great lad and I regard him as a pal. Speedway is a numbers game when it comes to team building and sometimes people are unlucky. Ricky has been a credit to Sheffield and I sincerely hope this isn’t the end of him in Tigers colours. I would like to think he can go away for a year and come back in the future to feature in our team.”
