DAVID Hoggart says telling Ricky Ashworth he wasn’t in Sheffield’s plans this year was one of the hardest things he’s ever had to do.

Ex Tigers skipper Ashworth is facing a race against time to be fit for a return to Owlerton for the first time tonight with new team Berwick after 10 years with Sheffield, and promoter Hoggart has admitted he hated making the call.

Ashworth crashed at the weekend and aggravated an old injury but is desperate to take his place at his former club.

Hoggart said: “Making the call to Ricky was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do, either in speedway or in business. Ricky is a mate, you know, and it was very difficult.

“Once we knew that we wouldn’t be using Ricky our focus was on helping him find another club and I’m glad that we were able to do that and Ricky has had an excellent start to the season with Berwick.”

Ashworth returns with a strong Berwick side and joins another ex-Tiger, Lee Complin. If those two, along with Sebastian Alden, hit form it could be a difficult night for Sheffield.

SHEFFIELD: Josef Franc, Hugh Skidmore, Ricky Wells, Richard Hall, Emiliano Sanchez, Joe Haines, Klaus Jakobsen.

BERWICK: Ricky Ashworth, Jason King, Lee Complin, David Bellego, Sebastian Alden, Alex Edberg, Lubos Tomicek.
