A DEPLETED Sheffield side put on a spirited display last night but just fell short of a league point at local rivals Scunthorpe.
Once again without Pepe Franc and Emiliano Sanchez, who scored a 15 point maximum on his last visit to Lincolnshire, the Tigers battled back from 20 points down to give the Scorpions a shock and nearly left with a reward for their efforts. As it turned out they had left themselves with just too much to do after a torrid start.
The visitors were on the back foot from the outset, falling 10 points down after just four races, but the way in which they rallied will be of comfort to the travelling fans.
Hugh Skidmore gave the fightback real emphasis when he teamed up with Richard Hall to grab an 8-1 in heat 10 after ex-Tigers rider Josh Auty had been controversially excluded.
Further wins for Hall, Joe Haines and guest Jason Bunyan gave the away team a glimmer of hope, but the task was just that bit too big.
Skidmore continued his fine form from Thursday with a top-score of paid-12, while skipper Richard Hall wasn’t far behind with paid-11.
There was much controversy over whether Joe Haines would be present but he was and it’s a good job for Sheffield - he notched paid nine.
Ricky Wells registered nine, Jason Bunyan paid five, but Chris Schramm really struggled to hit top form and didn’t score.
