Owlerton is the ‘spiritual home’ of Premier Race, says proud Neil

NEIL Machin says Owlerton deserves to host big meetings after Tigers landed two plum events.

Club owner Machin, who has spent the bulk of the winter in Australia, has sung the praises of stadium landlords A&S Leisure for their co-operation during tough financial times.

It’s well documented Machin lost thousands last season thanks to a series of cancellations through bad weather and a struggling team. Now he’s looking forward to the new season with optimism. Owlerton will hold a British Semi-Final on April 19 and the Premier League Riders’ Championship on September 22.

Said Machin: “Owlerton deserves to stage big meetings, no one can argue with that. Our landlords have supported us and we appreciate that. They have also continued to invest in their facilities and never rest on their laurels.

“We offer the best facilities in British Speedway in my view and it is only right that we stage meetings like the British Semi-Final and PLRC. I regard our track as the spiritual home of the PLRC now. Some people say it should go elsewhere on a rota basis but you have to look at the commercial success of the meeting and it always pulls in a big crowd at Sheffield. As a consequence, British Speedway benefits from that.

“We are all looking forward to the new season now. The team has been in place a while and all the boys are looking forward to it, there is a genuine feeling that we can surprise a few this year.”
