Sheffield face a nervous wait over injuries to two riders after they suffered a 55-40 defeat against Glasgow on a difficult afternoon at Ashfield.

Already without Josh Bates due to a hand injury, the Tigers lost No 5 Ty Proctor early on as he aggravated a thigh problem suffered in a heavy crash at Owlerton on Thursday.

The Aussie ace pulled up in his second ride in severe discomfort and was forced to pull out of the meeting, before middle order man Leigh Lanham also left Scotland with a back injury.

Lanham had endured a tough afternoon before falling heavily on the opening lap of heat 12 causing him to be taken to hospital by ambulance for further assessment.

Despite their huge injury troubles, the wounded Tigers put up a brave fight only to miss out on a consolation point for their efforts.

Skipper Simon Stead led the visitors in admirable fashion, adding 15 points including a superb last-lap overtake to snatch second from Kasper Lykke as he took Sheffield’s second tactical ride in heat 11.

The experienced Andre Compton also put in an excellent showing against his former club, storming to a double points victory in heat seven to keep his sides’ chances of a point alive.

However, the loss of Proctor early on proved devastating for Joe Screen’s men as they lacked the firepower needed to continue their improved form, accounting for only five race winners out of 15.

Taylor Poole did battle hard for a solid score down at reserve, whilst Ben Wilson also notched a creditable 3+1 as he continues to adjust to life back in the Premier League.

But James Sarjeant struggled as a replacement for the injured Bates, whilst Lanham was unable to make any significant impact prior to his unfortunate crash.

Although they could not add to their Premier League points tally it was an encouraging display from Screen’s side – yet they are now left with an anxious wait to discover the full extent of their injury problems.

Glasgow 55: Rusty Harrison 14+1, Theo Pijper 11+1, Kevin Wolbert 10+1, Kasper Lykke 9+4, Tom Perry 6+1, Anders Thomsen 5, Ryan MacDonald 0, Christian Henry r/r

Sheffield 40: Simon Stead 15, Andre Compton 12, Taylor Poole 5, Ben Wilson 3+1, James Sarjeant 2+2, Ty Proctor 2, Leigh Lanham 1.
