Machin backs title defence
Machin backs title defence
RICKY Ashworth is primed to defend his Premier League Riders' crown, according to Tigers owner Neil Machin.
The Sheffield skipper won the event, the biggest in the Premier League calendar, in front of his own fans last September on a memorable night.
And Machin has tipped Ashworth to retain his title and said: "Ricky is deadly serious about this season and he's showing a very professional attitude to it all.
"I personally feel he has the ability to take his career up a notch this year and that's bad news to those rivals hoping to take the PLRC crown off him."
Ashworth's task has been aided by the departure of Australian duo Ty Proctor and Darcy Ward, who have quit the Premier League to secure moves to the Elite with Wolves and Poole respectively.
"He beat them fair and square last season so it doesn't matter," said Machin. "There was sour grapes from some people who thought it was all because of home track advantage and Ricky is well aware of that.
"This season is his opportunity to prove it was no fluke."
