AMERICAN star Ricky Wells is certain his tough schedule this year will only be beneficial to him and Sheffield.

Wells, originally from New Zealand, is riding for the Owlerton side in the Premier League and double-up with Elite League Wolverhampton, as well as being pencilled in for the USA World Cup Team in the Summer.

Despite a potentially gruelling schedule, he is happy that he will cope with it well.

“It should be okay, obviously now is only the beginning of the year and we are all pumped up and looking forward to racing,” he said.

“It’s pretty busy all the way through the year for me but I don’t see it leading to any problems. It’s what I wanted to do so it should be fine - I think the worst thing will be the bike washing!”

Wells has been touted by many as a key member of the Tigers side this year and someone who could be pushing Pepe Franc for the number one spot, but he is not someone to make specific aims himself.

He said: “A few people have asked me what my targets for the season are and it’s a tough one. My biggest goal is to get dialled in at Sheffield as quickly as I can, I’m pretty comfortable at Wolverhampton and I want to feel the same here within a meeting or two. I’m concentrating on making some starts because it’s a lot easier when you can get out front!”

In what should be an exciting year for the 20 year old, Wells has been asked to represent the USA World Cup team this year in a revamped side.

He said: “The World Cup thing is pretty exciting, we’ve got Greg (Hancock) and Billy (Hamill) in again and we want to qualify. We came close last year but this time we really think we can get there. It should be a good year.”

Tigers are back in action at Owlerton tomorrow in their opening League Cup clash with Workington.

Club owner Neil Machin is predicting a tough meeting against a strongly fancied Comets side.

“The experts seem to think Workington are one of the favourites for silverware.

“It’s up to our boys to give a good display and get some points on the board. We know it will be tough but I’m sure it will be a good meeting and with the superb weather it puts you on the mood to watch speedway.”
