Joe bids to get back to basics

JOE Haines feels like he is starting all over again by joining Sheffield.

The former British Under 21 Champion admitted he considered quitting the sport towards the end of last season after a miserable campaign.

He couldn’t hold down a consistent Premier League club and even considered returning to the National League to rebuild his confidence.

And he even snubbed a chance to ride for Great Britain Under 21s in their clash with the USA Tourists in October.

Haines, who will meet Tigers fans at a function tomorrow at SAHA Social Club on Fulwood Road, is excited by the challenge.

He said: “This is a new beginning for me and I really do feel it’s like starting my career again.

“I need to get back to basics and focus on scoring some points at reserve for Sheffield and then try and step up my form another level.

“Everything is set up for me to do well but I admit it might take a few weeks to get used to Sheffield as my home track as it’s different to any other track I’ve had before.

“But I like the shape of it and it’s the fastest there is so I’m sure it won’t take too long and I’ll be fine, just like the rest of the boys.

“My confidence was at rock bottom towards the end of the season and I just felt it wasn’t worth it.

“I thought about packing it all in but then again it’s a good life being a speedway rider and I’ve still got lots of years ahead of me. I still want to achieve as much as I can in the sport.”
