Injured American star can’t grip yet intends to ride

Have your say

RICKY Wells is fit for Sheffield’s crunch meeting with Berwick tomorrow (7.45pm).

The American injured himself last weekend riding for Elite League team Wolverhampton and sat out their home tie on Monday, but is keen to ride for the Tigers tomorrow to test his fitness ahead of a world U21 championship meeting in Ukraine over the coming weekend.

He said: “I was going in to turn three at Eastbourne and I was on the outside, my team-mate picked up and t-boned me and I got thrown off the bike. It was pretty painful, my left hip and shoulder have some soft tissue damage and my hands are swollen.

“I don’t know yet whether I am going to the Ukraine. I want to see how I get on on Thursday before I decide because I don’t want to go and have to pull out. I have bikes on the way over there but I’ll know after Thursday what I’m doing.

“I wanted to ride on Monday but Wolverhampton wanted me to rest. At the moment I can’t really grip anything, but we’ll see. There are guys on standby who could take my place but I don’t want that. If I do go there, I will fly back in to Glasgow on Sunday so I can ride in Sheffield’s meeting there but everything is hinging on how I feel on Thursday. Hopefully I feel fine and help us win, go to Ukraine and score some points, and then go to Glasgow and do the same!”
