Hugh proved me so wrong, concedes boss

ERIC Boocock has admitted he was wrong about Sheffield's new signing, Hugh Skidmore.

The young Australian made a superb debut, scoring 7+1 in last week's Premier Trophy win over Newcastle.

But that was after boss Boocock expressed reservations about throwing the teenager straight into the Owlerton side after it was suggested by club owner Neil Machin.

Said Boocock: "I'll put my hand up and say I was wrong. I told Neil I thought it was too early for the lad; we've been staying quiet about him and helping him along the way.

"I didn't think he was ready but he proved me wrong last week. He showed no fear after sorting things out in his first ride and he was terrific.

"Neil asked me what I thought and I said he should leave it for a bit. That said, Neil was concerned about going forward with the rider replacement rule for the injured Ritchie Hawkins and felt we had to do something.

"We were looking at the prospect of another foreign rider but that didn't happen for one reason or another and we decided to throw Hugh in.

"I told Neil it was his decision and not mine, but of course I would never say that in public if it had gone wrong! Credit to Neil, he took the bull by the horns and decided to go with it, so I take my hat off to him."

Tigers are back at Owlerton tomorrow when they face Birmingham, who are a much-changed team, in more Premier League action.
