Excellent Tigers stay on course to finish fourth
Scunthorpe......41 Sheffield Tigers......51
SHEFFIELD kept their hopes of a top four Premier League finish alive with a thrilling win at Scunthorpe yesterday.
The Tigers produced an excellent all-round team performance that keeps them in the promotion play-off hunt.
It was a very close affair in the early stages with Simon Lambert and guest Alex Davies putting the Tigers in front with a 4-2 in heat 2, but the hosts immediately levelled in the next race. A succession of shared races then followed, which included wins for Josh Auty and Ricky Ashworth, but the visitors hit the front again courtesy of a maximum from Richard Hall and Josef Franc in heat 7.
And their lead was increased to six-points moments later when Hugh Skidmore took the chequered flag in heat 8 ahead of Viktor Bergstrom,
Heat 9 then proved to be a disaster for the Scorpions with both Tero Aarnio and Carl Wilkinson excluded in separate incidents, leaving Ashworth and Davies to ride unopposed for a 5-0 in a third re-start. With the hosts trailing 32-21 David Howe went for double-points in heat 10 and he linked up with team-mate Bergstrom for an 8-1, which closed the gap to 33-29.
But when their lead was threatened, the Tigers responded in style with Auty and Skidmore racing to a 5-1 in heat 11, and then Franc and Davies repeated the feat one race later.
Victory was confirmed in heat 13 when Magnus Karlsson failed to score from his tactical ride. The Scorpions out-scored the Tigers in the last three races, but it couldn't stop Eric Boocock's men securing four precious points.
