Newcastle Diamonds 49

Sheffield Tigers 44

SHEFFIELD Tigers suffered heartbreak in the Tyneside sunshine after losing a close encounter with Newcastle last night.

The Tigers looked to be cruising to victory as they led by 12 points at the interval, but the Diamonds came fighting back after the break to snatch the Premier League points in a dramatic last heat decider.

Josh Auty was top man with 11+1, as Sheffield picked up a consolation league point.

It was the Tigers who got off to a flyer with Ricky Ashworth and Emiliano Sanchez racing from the gate to a 5-1 in heat 1, and all looked to be going well when a Hugh Skidmore and Auty maximum in heat 8 put them 25-17 ahead.

But back came Newcastle when Stuart Robson (tactical ride) and Claes Nedermark held out a determined Shane Parker in heat 9 for a big 8-1, and the Diamonds really made the Tigers start to sweat when they further reduced the deficit to just three-points (36-33) with a 4-2 in heat 10.

Auty and Lambert momentarily settled the nerves with a 4-2 in heat 12, but the meeting was turned on its head when Kyle Newman and Kevin Doolan raced to a 5-1 over Ashworth and Parker in heat 13.

The Tigers still led by a single point at this stage, but they soon found themselves trailing when Robson and a rejuvenated Newman raced to another five-pointer in the penultimate race.

Sheffield needed nothing less than five points in the final race to claim the away victory, but it was not to be as Robson completed his 18-point maximum ahead of Auty, Doolan and Parker.
