Determined Ashworth shines in Tigers triumph
Sheffield Tigers 49 Redcar 35
RICKY Ashworth blasted back from a groin injury to see Sheffield to three crucial Premier League points on an uncomfortable night at Owlerton.
The Tigers skipper clocked up a superb maximum to see off the determined challenge of a much-changed Redcar side, who remained in contention to damage the home side's play-off aspirations for much of the meeting.
The bottom-of-the-table Bears arrived with virtually a select side, and it could be argued that the inclusion of Adrian Rymel and Sheffield asset Kyle Legault made them a stronger outfit than their regular septet.
Already missing long-term injury victim Paul Cooper, Tigers were further hampered by the late arrival of Richard Hall due to traffic problems, and he missed his opening two rides with his side having to go into Heat 5 with just one representative.
Redcar went into a shock lead through reserves Tomas Suchanek and Peter Juul with a 5-1 in Heat 2 before the Tigers pegged them back when Suchanek ground to a halt whilst holding second spot two races later.A close contest ensued with Josh Auty's unable to get on terms with Joe Haines in Heat 6, but the hosts went ahead in the next race with Ashworth's second win backed up by third place from guest Ricky Wells.
Hall won his belated first ride but the Bears remained in touch, and had a stroke of luck in Heat 10 when Auty crashed out when chasing Legault, and that took them into the last five races just two points adrift.
Tigers then raised their game in the closing stages, with 4-2s in Heats 11 and 12.
Ashworth and Auty then combined for maximum points to put Tigers ten-up.
But with Suchanek deployed for double-points, he was reversed to the back by Hall and Wells before his team-mate Charles Wright came down heavily on the third lap causing the race to be awarded as a 5-1 in the Tigers' favour.
The last race was not staged as Wright required further medical attention on an arm injury.
