Defeat in Wales keeps Tigers in fifth league spot

TIGERS saw their hopes of a top four finish dented with an agonising 47-43 defeat at Newport.

Eric Boocock's men were ahead with three races to go but the Wasps edged home leaving Sheffield thinking what might have been. They managed a consolation point because they kept the scores close - and head to Scunthorpe today desperate for victory.

Starting was all important on the dusty Queensway Meadow track and Newport took full advantage of the conditions as they sped from the tapes for a 5-1 in the first race.

Tigers guest Ricky Wells and Simon Lambert replied with a 4-2 in race two and Ricky Ashworth and Wells levelled it up with another in heat 6.

Newport then got their noses in front again in heat 8, but back came Tigers with Ashworth and Lambert pulling things level with a further 4-2 in heat 9. The Wasps regained a two-point advantage in heat 11, but when Wells and Josef Franc raced to a superb 5-1 in heat 12, Sheffield were suddenly in front for the first time (37-35).

But their joy was short-lived as Newport responded with a maximum in heat 13. Richard Hall did take the chequered flag ahead of Kyle Legault in the penultimate race, but Wells failed to beat Alex Davies in the battle for third place and so it went to a last heat decider with the hosts leading by two points. There was to be no final race joy for the Tigers as Legault led all the way.

NEWPORT 47: Kyle Legault 10, Leigh Lanham 9+2, Craig Watson 7+1, Robin Aspegren 6+2, Alex Davies 6+1, Todd Kurtz 6, Kim Nilsson 3+1.

TIGERS 43: Ricky Ashworth 11, Ricky Wells 9, Josef Franc 8+1, Richard Hall 6, Josh Auty 4+1, Hugh Skidmore 3, Simon Lambert 2.
