Champion masterminds tribute race night
AMERICAN legend Greg Hancock has emerged as one of the major driving forces behind the Ozchem Classic meeting at Sheffield on Sunday, March 15.
Hancock, who won the world title in 1997, is busy preparing for another challenge for the sport's ultimate prize this summer when he lines up in the Grand Prix series.
But he's also taking time out to assist with the organisation of the opening meeting of the season at Owlerton, which is in memory of his close friends Darren and Sharon Boocock, who died in a road accident last July.
The event will also commemorate Sheffield's 80th anniversary, and Hancock is joined by double world champion Jason Crump, British golden boy Tai Woffinden and Coventry's hot Aussie prospect Rory Schlein.
The Boococks' young son Jack will be invited as guest of honour on the day.
"Darren was like a big brother to me and together with Sharon they became my UK family as well," said Hancock.
"I knew Darren since I was about 14 years old when he used to travel through LA on his way to and from Australia, as a boy.
"We quickly became friends but he became my big brother when I began my career in the UK in 1989.
"He showed me how to survive in the UK after leaving home at a ripe age of 18.
"We had great times together and my wife and I will miss him like crazy. Our children, Wilbur and Bill, miss their Uncle Darren and Auntie Sharon."
Meanwhile Sheffield have confirmed their pre-season press and practice day will be on Wednesday, March 11, from 4pm.
Afterwards there will be a social gathering in the Panorama Room that night.
