Peter Mole is predicting a bright future for Sheffield’s teenage ace Josh Bates.
Tigers co-promoter Mole, who commutes to Owlerton from the West Midlands, went to Wolverhampton last week to see Barnsley-boy Bates make a guest appearance. Bates put in a solid showing.
Mole said: “I took the opportunity to go along because I’d hardly seen any speedway after all our rain-offs. Josh did extremely well; I’m very impressed by his progress. He’s showing a great attitude and is just the kind of rider we want at Sheffield. Hopefully that will continue on Thursday against Glasgow.”
Mole says the rain disruptions are doing Sheffield no favours. “It’s worse than I’ve ever known. We even arranged a team practice for last week because the lads wanted to try out some new engines and dust off the cobwebs. But typically even that got called off. Then we were off again last Thursday and this is a source of massive frustration for the club. It hits us financially and it means people are out of the habit of coming to speedway, but starting back against Glasgow on Thursday hopefully we will get some momentum into our season.”
Mole says Thursday will be a big night for team boss Joe Screen who enjoyed a successful spell with Glasgow at the end of his career. He said: “I’ve got no doubt Joe will be keen to put one over Glasgow, he did so well there until he retired last season and he still has friends there. I have a lot of respect for their team manager Stewart Dickson.
“They won the league title a couple of seasons ago and they will be looking to get back to the glory days.
“But the most important thing for us right now is to get racing again because it’s been a dreadful spell – especially for us as a new management team trying to establish ourselves.
“It’s not just the home meetings, we’ve had away meetings off too. We need the sun to shine!”
