RICKY Ashworth is desperate to be back on a bike this week as he looks to defend his Premier League Pairs title.
Ashworth, who pulled out of last week’s Sheffield meetings after a crash at Scunthorpe the week before, is hoping to ride against Leicester at Owlerton on Thursday and then take his place alongside Shane Parker in the showpiece event at Somerset on Friday.
He won the title alongside Josh Auty on a memorable night for the club last year and with Auty out injured with a broken ankle the club are fortunate to have Parker available.
Ashworth said: “I’m desperate to race and hopefully a few days extra rest will sort it for me. It’s always a shame when you have to miss meetings and I was gutted that I missed the two last week.
“I’m desperate to ride this week. Obviously we have the Premier League Pairs and that was one of the highlights of my career when we went there and won it last season, it was just so nice for us to win some silverware for the Sheffield management and the fans. I feel sad for Josh that he can’t defend the title but I’m hopeful I will be able to do so. It’s great for us to have Shane available because everyone knows how well he goes around the Somerset track.
“I will see how it goes over the next few days and hopefully by the time Thursday comes around and the home meeting with Leicester I’ll be able to make it.
“I would certainly want to ride in that if at all possible because I’ve been off the bike for a couple of weeks now.”
