Ashworth hurt as Tigers dip to Brummies

Birmingham 59 Sheffield Tigers 36

TIGERS are sweating on the fitness of in-form Ricky Ashworth after an opening race spill in last night's defeat at Birmingham.

The former skipper came down in a first turn incident and was unable to continue which wrote off any hopes Sheffield had of securing points and a place in the Premier Trophy semi-finals.He appeared for the re-run but was clearly struggling and was told to have the injury checked over at hospital. Youngster Josh Auty continued his stunning run of form with a 17-point haul from his six outings and he also contributed to the most exciting racing of the night. He went from third to first in his opening ride to pass the impressive Justin Sedgmen late on to give the fans plenty to cheer.

He also won his second ride for double points on a tactical ride but it was a case of damage limitation as Eric Boocock's men couldn't cope without Ashworth. Hugh Skdimore gained a second from his tactical outing but Birmingham were always in control despite the best efforts of Auty who won a standing ovation from the home fans for the entertainment value.

The result came hot on the heels of Saturday's brilliant Premier League win at Workington which rocketed Tigers into serious play-off contention. Said Auty: "I've really enjoyed the last few days and so have the team, to pick up three wins like we have is excellent. Now we just hope Ricky is going to be OK."

BIRMINGHAM: Jason Lyons 13+2, Steve Johnston 12+2, Aaron Summers 10, Justin Sedgmen 10, Richard Sweetman 6+2, Kyle Newman 5+1m Simon Lambert 3+3.

SHEFFIELD: Josh Auty 17, Hugh Skidmore 10, Paul Cooper 5+1, Richard Hall 4, Arlo Bugeja 0, Ricky Ashworth 0, Josef Franc R/R.
