Speedway: Hoggart salutes competition

DAVID Hoggart, the man in charge of British Speedway's high-profile events, says the Premier League Riders' Championship at Owlerton is the strongest for years.

The Tigers co-promoter was appointed co-ordinator of the Super 7even series of meetings and is at Ipswich this weekend for the Elite Pairs

But the line-up which has been revealed for the Owlerton-staged PLRC on September 26 is a mouthwatering one with former Grand Prix and World Cup star Joe Screen making his first appearance in the meeting as a representative of Glasgow.

There is bad news for reigning champion Ricky Ashworth, though, as he has failed to qualify and the two nominated riders to make up the field; Travis McGowan and Rene Bach, were next in order.

Teenage sensation Josh Auty, who rides for Great Britain in tomorrow's World Under-21 Final, will be Sheffield's representative in the showpiece event.

Hoggart said: "This is such an attractive line-up and I really cannot pick a winner. There's a mix of young, enthusiastic and up and coming riders alongside the likes of Joe Screen and Jason Lyons who have been there and seen it all. I'm sure Joe will be good value on a track he knows and likes.

"It's going to be one heck of a meeting and Sheffield Speedway are once again proud and honoured to be hosting the event on behalf of the British Speedway Promoters' Association.

"I firmly believe this is one of the strongest line-ups this meeting has enjoyed in recent seasons and I'm sure we will see plenty of exciting racing.

"It's disappointing for our own Ricky Ashworth to miss out on defending the title, but it's a decision I cannot get involved in because of my involvement with Sheffield."
