Amateur cueman Nico Elton is aiming to pick up a few tips from Mark Allen when he faces the world number eight in the International Championship qualifiers this week.

The Sheffield youngster, a regular member of the England junior team and winner of the English Under-16 title last year, takes on Allen at the Barnsley Metrodome on Thursday.

Elton, a part-time sandwich shop worker, finished 33rd on the Q School ranking list, handing him the opportunity to earn £3,000 and a trip to Chengdu in China next month - as long as he beats Allen.

The 17-year-old is acutely aware it will be the biggest match of his fledgling career but he is looking forward to performing at the highest level.

“I’ll learn as much as I can from watching Mark but if I get chances I’ll be looking to take them and not thinking about who my opponent is,” said Elton.

Fellow Sheffielder Joel Walker was in action against former world champion Ken Doherty last night.
