TOP snooker players will descend on Sheffield later this week for the start of the World Championship qualifiers at the English Institute of Sport.

Legends including Stephen Hendry, Jimmy White, Steve Davis, Ken Doherty and John Parrott will all be competing in this year’s qualifying tournament, which runs from April 5 to 12.

And then there are two final days of qualifying on April 14 and 15 to see who secures their place at this year’s £1.1 million event at the Crucible Theatre.

Just 16 qualifiers will earn the right to join the world’s top 16 players at snooker’s most prestigious tournament.

And seven-time world champion Hendry is arguably the top name gunning to secure his place at snooker’s ‘Theatre of Dreams’ having dropped out of the elite rankings for the first time in his career.

‘Whirlwind’ Jimmy White, a six-time Crucible finalist, has to win two tough qualifying matches to make sure of his place at the televised stages.

Ex-world champs Doherty, the 1997 Crucible winner, and 1991 winner Parrott are also hungry to qualif and battle for the £250,000 top prize.
