Reigning world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan claimed a 6-2 victory over Anthony McGill as he made a winning return to ranking event action at the International Championship in Chengdu.
The 37-year-old from Essex claimed his fifth World Championship by beating Barry Hawkins 18-12 at the Crucible in May but has not won a major tournament since.
The Rocket - now ranked 31 - comfortably saw off his 22-year-old Scottish opponent with breaks of 73, 80 and 52 to progress to the second round in China.
O’Sullivan, who faces Liang Wenbo in the next round, said: “Anthony is a really good player and got to semi-finals of the Asian Tour event last week.
“I’m just pleased that I was able to give the crowd something worth watching. It’s brilliant to come to Chengdu for the first time and the fans were fantastic.”
