FORMER Rotherham potter Shaun Murphy kept his Haikou World Open title hopes alive by advancing to the quarter-finals yesterday.

The former world and UK champion clinched a 5-3 win over Joe Perry in China as he moved a step closer pocketing the £75,000 first prize.

Breaks of 37 and 55 helped Murphy move 3-0 ahead before Cambridgeshire cueman reduced his arrears with a run of 48. Murphy knocked in a break of 57 to move within one frame of victory, only for Perry to win the next two frames to keep the contest alive.

But world No 4 Murphy clinched victory with a top break of 98 in the next frame and now faces Mark Selby today.
