Murphy fails to re-write history

SHAUN Murphy, the 2005 world champion and former Rotherham potter, launched his Crucible campaign with a 10-1 victory over Scotland’s Marcus Campbell.

Murphy came within a whisker of becoming the first player to inflict the first Crucible whitewash since 1992 when John Parrott beat Eddie Charlton 10-0 in the first round.

At 9-0 down though Campbell managed to win a frame and prevented himself being written into the history books for the wrong reasons.

“I’m a bit of a historian of snooker and I knew they’d be only one whitewash here and opportunities to join that club, so I was really trying my hardest,” reflected Murphy, who could face triple world champion champion Ronnie O’Sullivan in the next round.
