FORMER Rotherham potter Shaun Murphy crashed out of the Wuxi Classic at the first hurdle yesterday.
The ex-world and UK champion was thumped 5-1 by Dubliner Ken Doherty at the opening ranking event of the season at the Wuxi Stadium in China. And with defeat world No 6 missed out on a second round meeting with Stuart Bingham, last season’s Australian Open winner.
It was a bad day at the office for Murphy who mustered a top break of just 41, while 1997 world champion Doherty impressed with runs of 59, 55 and 40 to deservedly progress.
He tweeted: “Thanks for your support, even though I lost. Could be a long season if I play like that. lol.”
Earlier this week Sheffield-based Chinese cueman Ding Junhui was knocked out in the first round after a shock 5-2 defeat to Mark Davis.
Davis said: “I’ve played Ding quite a few times and he’s got the edge on me. It wasn’t a particularly good game.
“Ding didn’t play anywhere near as well as he can and fortunately for me that was the case and I managed to win a couple of frames that could’ve gone either way.”
