SMITH ON SOCCER - Marmite man spreads himself for airport kids

HE'S annoying, brash, loud and obnoxious.

Robbie Savage, the Marmite man.

Love him or hate him he's on every week to brighten up - or mess up - Radio Five Live's 606 programme on Saturdays, depending on your view.

The man with the flowing locks, whose hard-done-by expressions and crunching, flailing tackles have appeared at grounds near everyone since he left the sanctity of the Manchester United class of 1992.

He's a Welsh international who silenced one very aggressive caller who had said Savage was the embodiment of all that was wrong with the game and a terrible example to youngsters.

Savage pointed out all the top managers who have bought him or had him in their teams and asked were they all idiots then? Of course they aren't.

No-one has a career in football as long as he has without having talent. Talent, aggression and that wind-up factor that he brings to Saturday tea-times as surely as he does to the pitch every week.

There is another side to him. At East Midlands airport on Monday he was among a party of Derby County players heading off for a break in Malaga all lying about in their tracksuits like cats dozing in the sun.

As the boys slept Robbie went for a stroll among the throng of other passengers and one boy was brave enough to ask for a picture with him. That started the rush..

Robbie savage was charming, polite and friendly and made sure all the kids all went on holiday with smiles on their faces.

He's a wind-up but he's funny and a breath of fresh air. Then again I love Marmite.
