Sheffield Wednesday: Owls keep Chris O’Grady safe from injury

Wednesday pulled Chris O’Grady out of training yesterday because they did not want him to suffer the same fate as Chris Maguire.

Maguire suffered a knee injury at Middlewood after a loan deal with Portsmouth had been agreed and he was due to join Pompey the next day.

So the Owls took no risks with O’Grady after agreeing to let him join Barnsley on loan for the rest of the season: “He was going to train with us, but we pulled him out,” said Dave Jones.

The Owls boss sanctioned the loan because he had plenty of strikers and has been looking to move players out so he could bring others in.

He still had Gary Madine, Chris Maguire, Jermaine Johnson and Michail Antonio, and signed Leroy Lita.

It does not worry Jones that Barnsley are one of the Owls’ rivals in the relegation battle: “If you’re prepared to let people out, it’s one thing you can’t worry about; anything you do is a risk. With bringing Leroy in, we had to make space for that.”
