Sheffield Wednesday sign midfielder

WEDNESDAY today signed centre-midfielder Darren Potter on loan from Wolves until the end of the season.

The 24-year-old former Liverpool player is set to be in the squad to face Charlton at Hillsborough on Saturday.

It is Brian Laws's second loan swoop on Molineux in the space of a week.

The Wednesday manager landed wide man Michael Gray last week and he made his debut in the 1-1 draw at Ipswich on Saturday.

Laws was also chasing a centre-midfield player and said he would definitely get one in this week.

Potter was today confirmed as that man, with Laws saying: "Darren is a box-to-box midfielder, very athletic and he can see a pass.

"He can certainly add to our midfield. He's hungry, enthusiastic and has a desire to play football. He's another part of our plan."

Potter, aged 24, is a 6ft 1ins midfielder, a Republic of Ireland international, and a Liverpudlian who came through the youth system at Anfield. He made 17 appearances for his home-town club, including many in the cups and some in Europe.

The player said: "I'm really looking forward to the challenge here. I need games and this seems like a great club. Hopefully I can get a few goals whilst I am here."

Potter had a loan spell at Southampton in 2005-06 and a long-term loan at Wolves from August, 2006, before joining them in a 250,000 deal in January, 2007.

He has figured in 68 games in his time at Wolves - including their 3-1 win at Hillsborough last season - but this season has been unable to break into Mick McCarthy's high-flying side, partly because of last summer's signing of 1m-rated David Jones from Derby.

McCarthy required him for Tuesday's FA Cup tie at Birmingham, which may explain why the Owls could not complete a deal early in the week. He was an unused sub in a 2-0 win.

The signing of Potter could signal the end of the Owls' January dealings unless fringe players go out and allow Laws further room to manoeuvre, but clubs can make emergency loans even after this month's window has closed.

Meanwhile, the FA's national goalkeeping coach Martin Thomas has visited Middlewood in a link-up with Owls goalkeeping coach Billy Mercer and admits that Lee Grant is on the radar of the national team's set-up.

Thomas said: "He's in the form of his life and we just hope that he continues to progress and eventually move into the full England squad. He's as terrific lad and a terrific goalkeeper."
