DANNY Wilson says senior players such as Matt Hill and Neill Collins will prove instrumental as Sheffield United look to resurrect their faltering bid for automatic promotion, writes James Shield.
United, who visit Reading in the FA Cup on Saturday, lost further ground on the League One leaders after being held to a draw by Notts County last weekend.
Wilson, assessing events at Meadow Lane, admitted losing the likes of Collins (cheekbone) and Hill (jaw) to injury has adversely effected United’s form.
They return to action in the competition against Coventry City next month hoping to end a run of four matches without a win.
Insisting United possess both the calibre and character to force themselves back into top two contention, Wilson said: “People like Matt and Collo still have huge roles to play even when they’re out of the team.
“They’re always in the dressing room and encouraging the rest of the lads. Helping out where they can and making sure everyone involved in the game is prepared.
“Cressy (Richard Cresswell) is the same. They do it because they’re excellent professionals and that’s what excellent professionals do.
“They good to have around.”
With striker Shaun Miller also confined to the treatment room after suffering ligament damage, the squad which travelled to County boasted an average age of only 24.6 while five of the seven substitutes at Wilson’s disposal were aged 19 or below.
Wilson, the United manager, said: “We’re missing some important players but, at a club like this, the expectation levels don’t.”
