Sheffield United: Danny’s boys get wise

Jamie Murphy scores for United at Bournemouth

DANNY Wilson claims a streetwise streak has helped his players seize control of the race for promotion from League One.

Sheffield United climbed to the top of the table with a hard-fought but deserved victory at fellow title hopefuls AFC Bournemouth.

And Wilson, who revealed striker Jonathan Forte’s groin injury is unlikely to heal before tomorrow’s visit of Leyton Orient, insisted their “intelligence” and “experience” is starting to pay dividends.

“The discipline and attention to detail my lads showed (against Bournemouth) was exceptional,” the United manager said. “We’ve told them to go out there and express themselves but we also trust them to make the right decisions on the pitch.

“Some players, you have to tell them things three, four or five times.

“But good players, you’ve only got to tell them once. In fact, during a match, they can work things out for themselves.

“I thought the discipline our boys demonstrated was excellent. Sometimes people don’t see everything but we had to show that discipline here otherwise they (Bournemouth) would have got through.”

Jamie Murphy scored the only goal of the game during the opening period of a tense contest at Goldsands Stadium to ensure United leapfrogged Eddie Howe’s side and climbed to first in the rankings.

Bournemouth, who had kicked-off in second, slip four places as a result.

Nevertheless, with only two points separating the top six, Wilson warned: “It’s still very tight and there are still likely to be changes game by game.

“Hopefully the table only swings underneath us now but we can’t take anything for granted. We can only afford to focus on ourselves.”

* United are scheduled to host Sheffield Wednesday in the Professional Development League today despite last weekend’s under-18 fixture between the two teams being frozen off.
