A record entry of 96 competitors has been received for Sunday’s Sheffield closed championships sponsored by Redtooth, to be staged at the Institute for Sport.
More than 60 players will contest the open singles and 17 juniors will be welcomed to the event.
Defending champion Matt Dodds (Vulcan Redtooth) is top seed for the open singles, followed by team mate and former five- time champion Mark Short.
The third spot is taken by Redtooth’s David Thompson who is seeded number one alongside Short in the men’s doubles.
Isobel Ashley (Abbeydale) heads the women’s rankings above the title holder Sarah Short.
Due to an unfortunate fixture clash, four of the leading veterans will be on county championships duty representing South Yorkshire.
These absences create realistic opportunities for the number one seed Steve Crosby (Crookes), Ian Denton (2) and Dave Heppenstall (Stocksbridge) and Lance Webster (Redtooth) to claim a maiden veteran’s singles title.
Play commences on 16 tables at 8:35 am and is scheduled to finish at 6pm.
