Sparring with Sheffield’s former world cruiserweight champion Johnny Nelson has brought extra punch to the Owls’ pre-season preparation.

Players each did two one-minute rounds with him in the dome at the club’s Middlewood training ground.

The squad also undertook boxing-style circuit training.

Wednesday set up the session with Owls fan Nelson and boxing coaches in order to add a little variety to their build-up.

There was no risk of anyone being knocked out: players were allowed to try to hit Johnny but he threw nothing back.

Wednesday’s director of performance Alex Armstrong told the Star: “There’s a crossover between the two sports: in both you need muscle endurance, speed of movement, discipline and controlled aggression. What we did was variation on a theme

“It was a very hard session but the lads enjoyed it.” Rhys McCabe said on Twitter it was “the hardest thing I’ve done.”

Meanwhile, there has been fresh speculation about the Owls and Marlon Pack, with the Cheltenham midfield player saying he has received offers from several clubs and is weighing up his options.
