Dave Jones has confirmed that he wants to sign another “four or five” players after the arrival of Jacques Maghoma.
The Owls manager has a list of possible targets for each outfield department - up front, midfield and defence.
“We’re still looking to bring in four or five players,” Jones told The Star.
“We’re trying to clinch deals and hopefully we’ll get them done, but at this stage of the year a lot of players will keep all their options open, which you’d expect.”
Jones is always reluctant to name names but has already admitted that there is “ongoing” interest in last season’s loan players Leroy Lita and Jeremy Helan, and in Kevin Davies, who has left Bolton.
The Owls boss is also taking a look at French midfield player Gary Coulibaly. a 27-year-old from Monaco.
Chairman Milan Mandaric said: “A lot of work is being done. We are really looking to build a strong, competitive team.”
Mandaric hopes that further new players will be in place within the next couple of weeks. The chairman thinks that in Maghoma, Jermaine Johnson and Michail Antonio, the Owls already have a winger trio that will be unsurpassed in the Championship.
“Jacques has a lot of talent, and with JJ and Michail, we shall have pace and power as good as you can get,” he said. A return for Helan has also not been ruled out.
Mandaric confirmed that the club are looking for increased firepower up front and extra quality in midfield and at the back.
He added: “We’ve really got to target the top six and see how far we can go.
“We are looking now (for signings). Then we shall have another transfer window in January - we need to be as strong as possible before that.
“I am looking for the team to do better. In the second half of last season we got 40 points. If we can bring back healthy players, Antonio and Reda Johnson (after injuries), and we have five or six new players, I expect us to do a lot better.”
