Sheffield Wednesday fear defender Dejan Kelhar will miss the rest of the season after damaging his anterior cruciate ligament.

Owls boss Stuart Gray said today the 30-year-old, who penned six-month deal with the Championship club earlier this summer, will shortly undergo knee surgery.

Kelhar, capped six times by Slovenia, moved to Hillsborough on trial during pre-season after leaving Red Star Belgrade. The centre-back featured in their friendlies against FC Arsenal Tula, Doncaster Rovers and Newcastle United.

Gray said: “We sent him off for a scan and it didn’t comeback a good report. He’s hurt his ACL so he’s going to have major surgery. He got the injury in the Newcastle game and the specialist says he’s torn the ligament in his knee which needs to be repaired.

“I can’t see Dejan, unfortunately, playing for us again this season.

“Last Saturday, I had Dejan and Kamil [Zayatte] on the bench. I’ve got two outstanding centre-backs who are maybe performing because they can see what’s waiting to come in and take their place.

“It’s a bombshell for Dejan. I’m so gutted for him. He’s just been very unlucky.

“It was just an innocous challenge in the Newcastle game. He tried training with it. He was on the bench at Brighton and suddenly his knee has blown up. It’s not good news for him or for us.”

Gray believes Wednesday possess enough defensive cover despite Kelhar’s injury setback.

“I’ve got depth there,” he insisted. “Kamil came on for Glenn [Loovens] the other day and showed his qualities.”

Jeremy Helan is nearing a first-team return, having trained with the rest of the Wednesday squad today.
